The Gaffer

British slang for the manager or head coach. The term comes from old English workplace hierarchy, where the "gaffer" was the foreman or boss. In football, it carries a bit of respect and affection - you're not just calling someone "the manager," you're acknowledging they run the show. Players and fans use it, pundits too. Sir Alex Ferguson was often called "the gaffer" at Manchester United.

Social media slang for a league that's seen as uncompetitive because one team always wins. The implication is that the league is so easy, farmers could play in it. Originally aimed at Ligue 1 during PSG's dominance, now used for any league with a clear favourite. It gets thrown around in arguments about player stats - "he only scored that many because it's a farmers' league." Dismissive and disrespectful to everyone else in that league, but very common online.

A midfielder who arrives late into the penalty area to score. Not the same as a shadow striker who plays behind the forward - the box crasher starts deeper in midfield and times runs to arrive in the box just as the ball comes in, taking defenders by surprise. Lampard was the best at it, and Scholes was great too, but Gündoğan, Bellingham, and Rice all do it now. It's an underrated skill to time your runs into the box and score a goal.

The player who lies down behind the defensive wall at a free kick to stop the ball going underneath. As attacking players got better at hitting the ball under jumping walls, teams started putting someone on the ground to block that gap. It looks undignified but it works. You see it at almost every free kick near the box now, especially in the Premier League.
